As example, the use of marble floor tiles on the ground floor which advisable to apply waterproofing on the floor and coat of sealer to the back of the marble to prevent moisture observation.

New Tiling or Overlay Tiling

For new tiling work, cement screed to concrete floor or cement render to block wall will be prepared prior the tiling work. Setting out of alignment, dividing strips to different finishes to allowances for services or opening shall be coordinated.

As for overlay tiling to floor or wall tiles, carefully check the existing condition of the tiles are crucial to avoid hollowness in near future. The advantage of overlaying is saving of hacking work or redo the waterproofing but it is usually not recommended on the external floor tile like car porch or balcony where is continuous exposes to weather. The contraction or movement is higher and it tends to appear crack line along the grout and easily debond compare with new tiling.

Discuss with your tiler on your situation and choose the best option available after consideration of various pro and con.

Repair Crack/ Debonded Tile

Existing wall or floor tiles that cracked/ debonded/ dislodged or pop up can be quite annoying without repair. If you are opt for not fully replaced the entire tiling work, localised repair can be the cheapest options.

However, the challenges always on not able to find the original tiles from the local supplier and yet run out of spare tiles. It is not easily to find the matches tile if your tiles are over 5 years old and in special limited design. Reconsider to use the closer colour tile or design a pattern to match the existing design.

Do not underestimate the crack tiles or “popped up” tile, in most cases, the debonded tiles may just appear in 1 m x 1m size, but in actual fact the based screed are hollow for a size more than 3 m x 3m. In additional, it will increase the area when it is hacked or cutting during the repair process. Always be prepared for more to replace than you though.

For safety reason, the owner it advise to remove the the damaged tile immediately, cover up with thick cardboard and cordon off the area as it is tripping hazard and sharp edge may cut hand and foot. Call the contractor and make good the floor as soonest possible.

Cement Screed Flooring

There are more and more people are choose to keep the floor look original and industrial lookalike. Cement screed flooring finish is one of the alternative. However, to have a nice cement screed flooring is required at least 30 to 50 mm thk to achieve the necessary strength and trowel smooth finish in one operation. The base of the floor shall be sound, and no topping up on the existing tiling is advisable to avoid de-bonding problem.

For existing cement floor backing option. you may consider to top up high strength non-shrink grout after clean up the cement based or opt for self leveling compound finish if you have less than 5 mm thk constraint.

There are pro and con of choosing cement screed flooring, if you all not able to accept any hair line crack, high traffic area, high oil stain area, cement screed flooring may not be your option to consider.

Grouting or Pointing on the Tile

The gaps between the tiles is depend on the type of tiles and design. The usual gaps is around 2-3 mm thickness, and grout it with similar colour of cement colour grout. In some tile like slate tile or clinker floor tile will allow for around 5mm thk to form the checker layout. The gaps between the tile is providing expansion for the tile on different of temperature, the seamless joint pointing is not recommended to avoid crack and popping up tile in future.

Not all pointing shall be flat or even with the tiles, if the tiles are not super flat or round in edge, 2 mm sunken is recommended.
