The canopy roof is normally constructed along the apron/ back yard/ side way of the building and the structure is attached to the existing structure/ wall. The span for the canopy/ awning is normally within 1.5 m span. The purpose is to provide overhang shelter to prevent rain and water.
Leaking Problem at Canopy Roof
- Joint between the canopy and the wall
- The common detail of the joints are using sealant to seal up the gaps between canopy and wall. Over time, the sealant will be harden and shrinkage and water will seep through the joints and leak into frame below.
- The recommend method is to install proper flashing and embedded into the plaster wall between the wall and canopy.
- The joints between two structure is required to be properly treated with sealant or waterproofing membrane to prevent the leaking issue.
- Joints between the roof panel sheet/ glass to glass joints
- Due to wear and tear, the joints between the panel which is covered with capping or sealant will be compromised.
- Maintenance work to repair or replace the capping or sealant is required when found seepage issue along the joints.
- You may consider to apply clear or transparent waterproofing coating to the joints and improve the water tightness.
- Cracks of glass panel or canopy sheet ( poly carbonate)
- If the glass panel is beyond repair and over time the poly carbonate sheet is turn fragile, this is the time to replace a new sheet.
- For temporary or quick solution, you will apply a clear or transparent waterproofing coating to seal up the hair line cracks to maintenance the roof function , instead of replace a new sheet.
- For metal sheet awning, leaking on the roof sheet can consider to use cementitious waterproofing coating to apply to the metal roofing sheet.
